Our bizarro author group on facebook is at it again. This time interviewing serial SHB cover artist, and author of the upcoming SHB release Dinner at the Vomitropolis, Jesse “Wheelchair” Wheeler!
Ask the author with Jesse Reid Wheeler. July 2013
We asked the fans of Bizarro Fiction to ask the author/illustrator Jesse Reid Wheeler a bunch of random questions and this is what they had to say. So here goes…
Jesse. Could you just give us a brief intro as to who you are and what you do.
Howdy folks, fiends and freaks. My names Jesse “Wheelchair” Wheeler, AKA Jeezus Wheelchair. I’m a miscreant, minstrel, monster making, marijuana smoking author of horror. Specifically the Splatterpunk genre. I like long walks on the beach, breakfast in bed, and deviant sex.
Which authors and illustrators inspire you?
As far as authors go… Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, Richard Laymon, Wrath James White, Brian Keen, Bryan Smith, Tom Robbins, Carl Hiaasen. Those are my tops. My all time favorite illustrator is by far Simon Bisley.
What jobs in the past have you experienced and is there one you’d like to go back to?
I’ve worked a bunch of delivery jobs in California. From pizza to potting soil. But if I could go back to a job it would be Gas Station Attendant. I fuckin’ loved that job.
Who was your first character obsession and do you still draw that dude today?
My first character obsession was The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Haven’t drawn him since junior high. Maybe I’ll rehash him.
Do you ever vicariously exact revenge on people who tortured you as a child in your writing?
What do you wanna do with your life?
Make a living writing and illustrating horror.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully not in prison.
Which one of The Pointer Sisters is still bangable?
The one that looks like Grace Jones and Buckwheat’s lovechild.
What do tribbles taste like?
Are those similar to quabs?
How do you feel about badges?
ATF, DEA, FBI, all the same as STD’s – 3 letter acronyms for shit nobody wants to deal with.
You’re the kid that answered the 100 question test that said at the top, “Read the directions and put down your pencil.” At the top, aren’t you?
Truth or Dare?
Always Truth. I have zero shame.
Philosophically speaking, do you find you relate more with humanism or existentialism?
Probably a balanced mixture of both. Because I feel that there are too many Humans that shouldn’t Exist.
Best stoner movie ever?
A toss up between Street Trash and Eraserhead.
Best drug culture book ever?
Another Roadside Attraction by Tom Robbins.
Best song to pick your boogers to and wipe ‘em under the couch?
You Can’t Touch This – MC HAMMER
Someone zaps you with a magic wand. You are now a Lovecraftian beast. What sets you apart from the rest of the gibbering, ichorous, soul-rending gods?
I see myself as more of a corpulent genital appendage on one of the Elder Ones.
Thanks Jesse, that was… interesting!
